Somehow I managed to live four decades before reading William Ernest Henley’s 1875 classic in full. I’d heard snatches of it over the years, but I didn’t read the whole thing until the evening of February 10th, 2023, and as the words entered my being so did the accompanying melody, and as if in a sort of delirious trance, I immediately hammered out the chord progression on my favorite felt piano, switched my microphone on and recorded the thing in one take, before it vanished from whence it came. Inspiration is perishable, after all. When you have your inspiration, do it right then and there.
I listened to that demo as I went to sleep that night, and heard the rest of the music swelling around that rough skeletal sketch - the strings, the guitars, the drums, the gospel choir, the cannon… and so soon they too came into being, as I had imagined, and lo, the song was done and it was a thing of glory and wonder, that had existed for hundreds of years, waiting for me to come along and drag it into being.
